PURPOSE OF NUMISMATICS

Science of study of coins is known as NUMISMATICS.  In India coins have their historical value and antiquarian interest.  In the case of countries for rich written history is available, coins and not of much historical value.  But this is not the case of India. Though the ancient indians can definitely be set to have processed some sort of historical perspective, they did not give much importance to the history writing, nor India could produce a Herodoltus  who could have preserved to the posterity a connected account of the country. Hence, for the reconstruction of the history of ancient india, the modern historian has to depend upon bits of information from various sources such as literature, epigraphy, numismatics etc. The study of coins helps us in many ways in political, administrative, geographical, religious, social and ecnomic spheres.
